Virtual University Fall Classes
Enhanced Web Design
JavaScript
Notes:
There is always something new to learn!
Once you have learned something, it will probably change!
This is an addictive process - can't stop wanting to know more!
My classmates are so helpful and talented! Mates and instructors are so willing to share
There is more to learn by seeing others sites than in any text
The more we do, the more the challenge to keep everything organized
Image Mapping -
I had done this for the Normandy Seminar tour map page and found it to be fairly painless using CuteMAP from GlobalSCAPE. I also like CuteFTP for transferring files -
GlobalSCAPE website
Frames -
After making a page - my frames page, decided
I much prefer tables. However, I think frames can be useful in some cases,
such as a site with a long menu that needs to be repeated on each page.
It was a good exercise in figuring out the right percentages for each
frame. I discovered a difference between TARGET_blank to open a new page
and TARGET_top to stay in the same window. Also learned to eliminate border
lines - to use
FRAMESET ROWS="nn%,*" BORDER=0 SPACING=0 FRAMEBORDER=0 FRAMESPACING=0 MARGINWIDTH=0 MARGINHEIGHT=0>
This last from Joe Barta. Excellent tutorials on frames, forms, and making web pages - frames tutorial I have a Webtutor folder with both. They download in zip format. From Eagle, another good tutorial source is Sharky's .
Counter -
I have an "invisible" counter from FXWeb which has proved to be a good way to track the number of visitors to the Normandy site without any obnoxious (in this case) messages such as "You are visitor #832." All of the sources mentioned are from VU Resources listed for classes. It could take years to track them all down!
Forms -
This one was fun, though I don't, at the moment, have a practical applicaton for it. After checking with the web resources site on Earthlink, managed to copy and paste their CGI script and set it up. Learned that it's best to keep text box small enough to accomodate different browsers and to use the WRAP="hard". Also learned that, in real life, it would be important to have some kind of mail management system for responses!
Browsers and Scripts -
Found that Netscape has some sort of conflict on my system and causes
it to crash. Therefore, sadly, I'm going to have to remove it.Web
Garage does check for cross-browser compatability.I also likeWeb
Doctor for page validation. Tried to set up various menus
and links with scripts and found only some things work with both Explorer
and Netscape. "Moveable Menu" does work with both, but is shaky in NS.
Internet Explorer 5.5 seems to do much better than Netscape 4.6.
Have included a "linklist" script on this page.
Site of the Week -
Enjoyed re-visiting Moyra's Jewels*
, a superb graphics site. It's entertaining just to browse through
all the incredible pages.
*Update: Sadly, as of January 1, 2002, this site has been taken down.
Utilities -
The JavaScript Menu Builder - demo version builds menus online. NoteTab Pro makes life simpler without compromising the "learning curve." NoteTab Lite is free and also good. Web Embedding Font Tool - from Zonie with the caveat that only IE4 or greater uses embedded fonts.
