2001 STAFF RIDE - WEEK IN NORMANDY

Saturday 2 June- Muster in front of Carentan's railway station, 1700. Carentan, located inland between Utah and Omaha Beaches, is about three hours drive from Paris and is also on the Paris(St Lazare)-Cherbourg rail line.

Sunday 3 June- Commence daily routine: Short briefing at La Porte Rouge on day's events, student on-site presentations, followed by a short wrap-up at the end of the day. View a short documentary on Ranger training prior to invasion, then visit Pointe du Hoc. Proceed to Vierville draw and commence Omaha Beach operations between Charlie and Dog Green sectors which "hosted" the 116th of the 29th ID. We then will move east and invest strongpoint WN62 overlooking Easy sector formerly housing 75mm, 50mm and several Tobruks which greeted the 1st ID's 16thRCT.

Monday 4 June- German and American Cemeteries. Afterward, head to Utah Beach and the 4th Division's landing, "we'll start the war from (t)here." Walk up the beach several hundred yards to the planned landing site. Enter the dunes and note a classic example of defense in depth.

Tuesday 5 June- After visiting the Bayeux museum, Memorial de la Bataille de Normandy, go to Arromanches and begin the review of Gold, Juno and Sword Beaches where the British and Canadians came ashore.

Wednesday 6 June- Ste. Mere-Eglise and Musee des Troupes Aeroportees. Possible demonstration paratroop drop nearby, subject to final confirmation in April. Proceed to Cherbourg and Fort du Roule's Musee de la Liberation which features life during the Occupation, and the repair and clearing of the German wrecked harbor.

Thursday 7 June- Falaise Gap via St. Lo. Visit the Resistance prison porch and "mayor" Major Howie who, after k.i.a. 18 July, the next day realized his desire of being one of the first Americans into the city. Argentan to Chambois where Fifth Armored linked up with First Polish Armor and then to Hill 262 from which the 1PAD dominated the Corridor of Death. Option, Falaise museum featuring Allied and Axis heavy equipment.

Friday 8 June- Open day. Opportunity to visit or revisit sites concerning your research paper, or see places such as Avranches and Villers-Bocage. Some may wish to view the famous Bayeux tapestry, visit Mont-St-Michel, buy copper pots at Villedieu Les Poeles or pottery at Noron-la-Poterie. Farewell get together in evening.
